Press Release: US Ambassador Visiting Ongoing Rehab Works of the Strategic Samtskhe-Javakheti Road

On May 6, US Ambassador to Georgia John Bass and MCG CEO George Abdushelishvili, together with the representatives from Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and construction companies paid a visit at AzerinSaat Construction Camp Headquarters in Akhalkalaki. AzerinSaat is one of four construction companies selected by MCG through the international competitive bidding. According to $50 million contract, company carries out rehabilitation works on the Teleti-Koda-Asureti (19km) and the Nardevani-Satkhe (47,8km) road sections. The road construction-rehabilitation works is also performed by: Ashtrom International Ltd (Israel), the joint venture Papenburg/Black Sea Group (Germany-Georgia),and Akkord Insaat Senaye (Azerbaijan). The works are carried out within the framework of MCG's Samtskhe-Javakheti Road Rehabilitation Project and envisage rehabilitation of around 223 km road in Kvemo Kartli and Samtskhe-Javakheti regions. Construction works are intensively conducted on all sections of the road: weak sections of the ground are reinforced, ground is leveled and the frost-resistant layer is applied. The first layer of asphalt is already being laid in some parts of the road. Currently, winter maintenance and preservation works are underway on all sections of the Samtskhe-Javakheti Road. ### Samtskhe-Javakheti Road Rehabilitation Project ($203,5 mln) is aimed at improving the road network in the regions of Samtskhe-Javakheti and Kvemo Kartli. As a result of Project implementation, better conditions will be created for trade, tourism and other business development. The rehabilitation will support to link these two regions to other parts of Georgia, which, on its part, will accelerate social, political and economic integration of population. Construction/rehabilitation works will be completed by end of 2010.
As road rehabilitation process is completed, the road maintenance will be assigned to the Road Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia.
